Book Review: Where Magic Begins By Faith Prince

Where Magic Begins by Faith Prince is a dual-perspective YA fantasy romance—following twin sisters Saria and Zoeli on their journeys with and without magic.
As this is not a genre that is often on my TBR, I think it is important to note that the author reached out to ask me to read and review. I was honest when I told her I would be willing and happy to read but may be more particular since I do not read fantasy as frequently. Despite my slight hesitation, I am glad I read Where Magic Begins.
Although there were a lot of concepts and laws for the magic discussed in the book, Prince gave the information in helpful detail, which was not overwhelming. With fantasy, sometimes there can be a lot of details, which leaves the reader with a lot to remember and can lead to confusion as they progress further into the story. Prince's world-building was done exceptionally well, especially considering the shorter length of this story, for a fantasy, at 231 pages.
Also, the shifts in point of view were done well as they aided in building anticipation for what's to come while also leaving me excited for the next sister's point of view.
Additionally, the epilogue shocked and excited me and left me hanging, so I look forward to reading a sequel, whenever that may be.
After reading, I am team Zoeli. I enjoyed her storyline a lot more than Saria's, but I felt they equally had merit. I found myself wanting more of Zoeli's POV, which makes sense considering the focus of her description in Prince's book summary.
Aside from the magic and the romance, I like that Prince included elements of genuine friendship, beauty standards, and the importance of being true to yourself. I always enjoy looking for the underlying/additional messages in stories.
Although this wasn't my favorite fantasy I've ever read, I will reiterate and say that I am glad I picked it up. Since it has been quite a while since I read a fantasy like this, I forgot how much I enjoyed the world-building and literal magic of it all. This read has definitely sparked a desire to read some more fantasy in the coming months.
With an entertaining plot, excellent world-building, and the ability to remind me of the joy of reading fantasy, I am rating Where Magic Begins 3.5 out of 5 stars. And a one on the spice scale for the closed-door element of the romance.
