Book Review: The Rebound by Leeanne Slade

Duration: 10 Hours 13 Minutes

Audible Original

Officially, found my favorite listen/read of the year so far! The Rebound by Leeanne Slade is excellently crafted and written in such a way that makes you feel all the feels. This romantic comedy is witty, fun, and feel-good.

As usual, I listened to this book on my commute to work over the last two weeks and found myself incredibly entertained and invested in the story of Kitty Harris. Panicked and anxious when Kitty was anxious, heartbroken and grief-stricken when Kitty was hurting, angry when she was angry, and in awe and in love when she was in love.

Suggesting a summer-long break from her seven-year live-in boyfriend after a cheesy proposal in their weekly Thursday night pizza, Kitty Harris is determined to change her views and fears on marriage, so she is not afraid to say, I do. But with flashbacks of her childhood and her parent’s rocky divorce, Kitty fears she will never be open to marriage and lose the man she loves.

After kicking her out of their apartment to jumpstart the whole break concept, Kitty finds incriminating evidence against Archie, her boyfriend, when packing up her belongings that sends her over the deep end. Panicked and revenge-seeking, who else would show up in a moment of pure distress but her advertising nemesis, Leo Evans.

Dealing with his own divorce but still in favor of the idea of marriage, Leo suggests forming a rebound fling with a marriage boot camp mixed in to help Kitty shake her fears. Dealing with relatives, crazy cat hotels, broken harnesses, run-ins with exes, hiding from coworkers, and many other messy details, their “Saturdays only” fling turns quickly into a full-blown romance that neither of them wants to admit, leaving Kitty with a lot to think about.

Following Kitty’s journey of self-discovery, rebounding, healing, and career development, Slade crafts a lovable main character who feels like you are reading about your best friend. I felt the need to kick ass when someone’s ass needed to be kicked, cheer her on when she needed a cheerleader, a shoulder to cry on when she needed to vent and tune in for all the gossip. Based on Slade’s writing and Claudia Jessie’s excellent performance, I feel so connected to Kitty. The emotion embedded in the words and inflection in her voice hit deep.

Gut-wrenching details in the beginning, heartache and pain during discovery, laughter mixed in, and such joy and love emanated from my soul at the end. I was so moved by the emotions I felt throughout this story. If you like romances, definitely add this title to your list.

With so much power behind her words and such a fun and entertaining plot, I never wanted this story to end. Rooting for all the happy endings imaginable. The Rebound by Leeanne Slade earns a well-deserved five out of five stars from me.

As always, thanks for reading! 💜
